Fog Fest 2011 Aims to Be Green, Give Back

Pacifica's 26th annual festival happens this month. Here is a look at the festival's fund raising and "greening" efforts.

The annual Pacific Coast Fog Fest kicks-off on September 24 with with an anticipated draw of over 80,000 festival goers.

The event aims to be more than a two-day frolic on Palmetto Avenue in the long-run with fundraising and eco-friendly initiatives to benefit Pacifica.

Here's a look at some of those efforts.

“Greening” Efforts

According to a statement from Fog Fest Organizing Group (FFOG) on the event website, “We strive to lessen our environmental footprint by moving towards zero waste.”

In keeping with this mission statement, the Pacifica Beach Coalition has teamed up with Fog Fest organizers to form the Green Team.

Green Team will organize a volunteer-led effort to promote festival-goers’ use of on-site recycling and compost stations, work with vendors at the event to help them meet Fog Fest requirements of minimum waste, and raise awareness about Pacifica Beach Coalition’s local beach beautification and preservation efforts.

According to a statement from Pacifica Beach Coalition website, volunteers will “help reduce litter and conserve resources.”

The beach coalition is a Pacifica-based non-profit organization that has led numerous community-building beach cleanup and wildlife preservation initiatives in the city of Pacifica.

In addition to Green Team efforts, Fog Fest will also promote eco-friendly transportation habits through free on-site bike parking stations.

“A Gift for Pacifica” Fund

Each year since 2000, the proceeds raised by Fog Fest have gone back to Pacifica community groups that have participated in organizing the event.

According to the Fog Fest Organizing Group, each year just over 40 groups benefit from the festival’s proceeds and about $525,000 have been awarded to-date.

A few of the participating community groups in this year’s Fog Fest include Pacifica School for the Performing Arts, Pacifica Beach Coalition and Pacificans CARE.

Fog Fest Organizing Group has also created a Gift to Pacifica Fund, which has a current value of $18,000 dollars.

One of the community projects this fund has financed is a painting displayed at the Pacifica Community Center.
