Pacifica School Volunteers, a nonprofit organization, trains and places volunteers from the community in Pacifica's…More public schools. Most volunteers work with individual students who need help in math, reading and other academic subjects. There are several other ways for community members to donate their time, however, including drama, art, music and physical education training and lessons, or simply reading aloud to children. There's also an annual Kinder-Camp every summer during which adult and high-school age volunteers help prepare kids for kindergarten. </p> <p>Before entering schools, volunteers will be trained by Pacifica School Volunteers in workshops that teach them the skills and teaching methods for the subject of their choice, like K-8th grade math, for instance. Space is limited at these workshops, however, so interested community members should call and reserve a spot ahead of time. </p>

At the Alma Heights Christian Academy Elementary School, students get their first taste of the academy's curriculum,…More which treats the Bible as a core subject and emphasizes rigorous math and language-arts courses. Music instruction is required at the elementary school, and students have access to a modern PC lab, plus plenty of room to exercise on the academy's 40 acres of land. </p> <p>For admittance into the elementary school, students grades K - 1 must take a developmental test; children in grades 2 - 4, must take a test in math and English. Need-based financial aid is available to help some families pay Alma Heights' tuition; families are required to volunteer for school events, fundraisers and activities.</p>
