Beside more standard subjects like math, science, language arts and history, staff and parents have incorporated gardening and arts projects, as well as community outreach programs, into an Ortega Elementary student's experience.
In addition to the school's library, each classroom contains a smaller one with grade-specific reading materials. Math is taught using a conceptual method and hands-on activities are utilized to spark student interest and retention.
Students can participate in several afternoon activities at Ortega Elementary as well, including dance, chess, science and sports.
According to the 2010 California Standard Test Report, nearly 62 percent of students at Ortega Elementary tested "proficient" or "advanced" in English language arts, while nearly 73 percent and just over 78 percent tested "proficient" or "advanced" in math and science, respectively.
