Weekend Planner: Catch Pacifica Writers on the Literary Stage at the County Fair

Go to the San Mateo County Fair, run for the Pacifica Education Foundation and watch 'Chasing Ice.'

Friday, June 7 Pacifica's Environmental Family contacted the filmmakers of "Chasing Ice" and received permission to host the "Pacifica premiere" of the documentary at 7:30 p.m. in the Mildred Owen Concert Hall, 1220 Linda Mar Blvd. A sliding scale donation of $10 to $20 will be requested at the door. "Chasing Ice" is the story of acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog's mission to gather undeniable evidence of our changing planet.

Saturday, June 8 PEFathon III takes place at San Pedro Valley Park in Pacifica. PEF helps support instrumental music in the middle schools and 21st century experiences in every grade to support public education in the Pacifica School District. Get more information here.

Sunday, June 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. author Matthew O'Malley will be at Florey's Book Co., 2120 Palmetto Avenue, Pacifica, to present the two latest books in his "Coastside Detectives" series.

Also, this Sunday is the Pedro Point Headlands Bird Hike from 8 to 11 a.m. With its diverse habitats of coastal scrub, coastal prairie, Monterey Pine woods and Eucalyptus forest, all accessible via a good trail system, the Pedro Point Headlands is a great place to become more familiar with Pacifica's avifauna. All weekend long, the San Mateo County Fair opens, running June 8-16, and a number of Pacifica writers will mark their return to the California Writers Club Literary Stage in the Fine Arts Galleria. The writers are offering this year's Poetry Forum event as a tribute to the late Rod Clark, San Francisco State University Professor Emeritus of Behavioral Science, and Pacifica's first Poet Laureate. 

Catch these Pacifica writers at the Fair during the following times and dates:

Thomas Ekkens and Joanne Shwed will be at the "Carry the Light" launch and autograph party on Saturday, June 8, 2 to 3:30 p.m. On Tuesday, June 11, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Darlene Frank will teach a writer's journey workshop, and from 4 to 5 p.m. Frank will be a part of "Wise Women Elder Poets." Same day, 5 to 6 p.m.,. Frank and Hirzel will be among the readers of "Three Short Plays," and from 6 to 7 pm., Hirzel will give a talk on his book "Hold Fast: Tom Crean with Shackleton 1913-1916." Still on Tuesday, at 7 p.m, Gustav Tjgaard will read from his work, "Windjamming to China."

David Hirzel & Friends will perform original acoustic music on Thursday, June 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Also on the 13th, from 6:30 to 7 p.m., Anna Boothe will discuss her book "Job Hunting," and then from 7 to 8 p.m., the Pacifica Poetry Forum will share their voices in tribute to Rod Clark.
