Cabrillo Students Fold More Than 1,000 Cranes For Japan

Each crane is equivalent to $1 for earthquake and tsunami relief.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane.

The wish was generally for a long life or recovery from illness or injury. But the students at decided to follow the legend and join the One Million Cranes Project, that challenged 1,000 groups of students to raise $1,000 each by agreeing to fold one crane for each dollar raised.

In just two weeks, the halls at Cabrillo have become adorned with more than one thousand colorful cranes flitting in the sunlight.

This is a school-wide project, with seventh and eight grade students leading the way by providing instruction to the K-6 grades in art of origami. The enthusiasm of older students, under the guidance of teacher Meghann Elsbernd, is infectious and students of all ages can be found folding cranes during recess, lunch and in the halls after school.

Cabrillo students can proudly claim to have surpassed their inital goal, having raised more than $1,500 in less than two weeks.
