The rehabilitative power of the ocean and surfing. That’s what the folks behind the nonprofit AmpSurf want participants to experience at their Rehabilitative Surf Clinics.
On Sept. 15 at Linda Mar Beach from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. anyone and everyone with a disability — from amputees and the blind to quadriplegics and veterans disabled with traumatic brain injury — are invited to participate in AmpSurf’s annual Rehabilitative Surf Clinic.
“Whether they are a veteran who served in war, or whether they are a child of autism, or a young woman who has lost a limb to cancer, AmpSurf offers a unique program to bring the healing power of the ocean and adaptive surfing together for an experience that is both mentally and physically rehabilitating,” said Bruce Marchese, AmpSurf board member.
For nine years, AmpSurf has been providing amputees, veterans, and friends and families of the disabled.
“We hope that participants will learn the healing powers of the ocean via surfing and teach them to never allow their handicap to become an obstacle,” said Marchese.
The organization’s goal is to “promote, inspire, educate, and rehabilitate people with disabilities,” said Marchese, especially veteran heroes through adaptive surfing and fun, safe, outdoor activities that everyone can participate in.
“Each year we have expanded our operation all along the West Coast and for the past two years we are now on the East Coast. We are trying to establish a northern and southern chapter on the West Coast.”
The organization depends upon donations and volunteers for their operation.
The public can help by signing up as volunteers at www.ampsurf.org .
Water helpers, beach assistants and set up volunteers are needed.
“We are grateful for the time and effort that our volunteers give, to make it a successful clinic,” said Marchese.
Instructors are certified and work on a one to one basis. Life vests and helmets are provided if needed. The clinics are free to all severely disabled.
“This is our way to thank our hero's for there service," said Marchese.
Civilian's and children of all ages are also welcome. There is a small deposit that each participant must send which is returnable if you attend the day of the clinic.

The AmpSurf event in Pacifica will be on the Sept. 15 at Linda Mar Beach. Volunteers should be there by 7 a.m. and the participants at 8 a.m.
