Terra Nova Girls Wrestle Strong at Napa Valley Classic

The Terra Nova Lady Tigers wrestling team traveled to Napa this last weekend to compete in the 16th Annual Asics Napa Valley Classic at Vintage High School. This tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious in all of girls’ wrestling, and many equate the competition there to the caliber found at the CIF State Championships.

Terra Nova’s girls’ wrestling has a young and enthusiastic team this year. New members include freshmen Sara Mochel, Marian Mejia, and Yvonne Yip and sophomores Veronica Rodriguez and Katie Filar. The first year grapplers are rounded out by junior Cassie Arenas. Returning this year are sophomores Sydnie Theisen, Natalia Ruiz and Teagan Allen. The young Lady Tigers are led by veteran senior co-captains, Mallory Moore and Alli Kretschmer.

Although most of the young team wrestled their hearts out, few made it to the second day. However, the Napa Valley Classic has a second tournament on Saturday for those girls who still want to get on the mat and go up against some strong competition. At this G3 Tournament, Mochel, Mejia, Yip and Allen all enjoyed the chance to further hone their skills against other girls from all over the west coast. It was a great confidence booster for the enthusiastic young group. The Lady Tigers have a strong future ahead of them with these ladies coming up.

Competition was fierce on Friday, the first day of wrestling, but Theisen, Moore and Kretschmer all fought their way onto the second day’s brackets. Theisen came up against some strong competition, and finished in the top half of her group. As Saturday came to a close, Mallory Moore was awarded 8th out of thirty-two in her bracket, and Alli Kretschmer came away with 4th in her weight class of thirty-two. It was a strong finish for the Lady Tigers, who came home to Pacifica feeling exhausted, but confident.
