Pacifica Gardens to Host Annual Bee Count

A San Francisco State research group is tapping volunteers to count bees in their own backyards. The group needs more volunteers to help get a nationwide snapshot of bee populations.

Do you have a lot of honeybees buzzing around your backyard? A San Francisco State University biologist needs your help with The Great Sunflower Project coming up on Aug. 11.

SF State Biologist Gretchen LeBuhn and her team are urging people across the country to count bees in their yard and neighborhood gardens as part of a “Great Bee Count.”

A bee-counting event at Pacifica Gardens on Aug. 11 will be among 2,000 Bay Area participating gardens.

Volunteers can view an interactive map showing data from the previous four years of the project and see what is happening in their neighborhood. “The results map that’s now on the website is pretty powerful,” LeBuhn said in a prepared statement. “For those who already participate, this can help them look at the area around them and see if there’s anyone else they can encourage to join.”

The first four years of the study has revealed that there are fewer bees in urban areas than anywhere else, even the desert.
