Update 3:08 p.m.:

Grant "Twiggy" Baker has won the 2014 Mavericks Invitational big wave surf contest.

Baker, of Cape Town, South Africa, was the winner of the 2006 contest. One of the few surfers to dedicate his life to surfing big waves worldwide, Baker is a constant factor in the annual Billabong XXL big-wave awards, earning the 2010 Ride of the Year (from the Maverick’s contest) and winning for Biggest Wave and Best Overall Performance in 2009. In January 2008, he ventured out to Cortes Bank (off the California coast) to tow-surf waves still widely recognized as the largest ever ridden.

The final heat for the 2013-14 Body Glove Mavericks Invitational is on, starting at 1:30 p.m. Friday, with two surfers from Santa Cruz vying for the win.

Anthony Tashnick and Ryan Augenstein both of Santa Cruz made it into the final heat for the Mavericks Invitational surf contest and will compete this afternoon against four other surfers for the $50,000 prize.

Greg Long of San Clemente and Tyler Fox of Aptos are the two other California surfers in the heat along with Grant Baker of Cape Town, South Africa and Shane Dorian of Hilo, Hawaii.

A legend at 16, when he stepped up to ride what many called the “wave of the winter” at Maverick’s in 2001, Tashnick is now a mainstay in the world of big-wave riding. The latest in a long line of chargers from the West Side of Santa Cruz, Tashnick won the 2005 Maverick’s contest in such dominant fashion, there was no question who would take home the trophy.

Augenstein got his first contest invite in 2005 and made a big impression, reaching the semifinals. And he’s drawn respect this winter by surfing one of the shortest boards (8’4”) ever ridden by the Maverick’s regulars.
