Pacifica Islanders Game a Win, Win

The local football team dominated their opponent while raising money for a family in need.

Last Saturday night the Islanders hosted the Tuolumne County Outlaws on what turned out to be one nicest evenings of the year weather wise. The event was also fundraiser for the Haro family, who recently suffered the tragic loss of two family members in a that also left the surviving family members homeless.

The  continued their early season dominance, defeating the Outlaws 53-6 in front of a great crowd that turned out for the event while also raising money for a great cause. All of the proceeds from the gate and the t-shirt sales will be donated to the Haro family.

QB Myles Gates didn’t take long to get Pacifica on the board, running in the first TD of the game with 10:31 still left in the 1st quarter. A fumbled snap on the pat made the early score 6-0. Following a James Barnes interception and less than 3 minutes later Gates connected with his twin brother Michael Gates for a 40 yard touchdown reception, giving Pacifica an early 13-0 lead.

Punt returner and cornerback Paki Gordon was able to return another huge punt for 64 yards only to get tackled at the Outlaw 3 yard line, robbing him of his 4th TD return in the season. Next up was RB Sal Washington who scored 2 consecutive rushing TD’s before the half. Sal not only punched it in from the 3 after Paki’s return but did it once more from the 34 line of the TC Outlaws. Sal’s 2 TD performance got him the offensive player of the game honors. WR Wes Walters also got into the action as he caught a Gates pass for an 18 yard TD just before half time. The Islanders went into the half with a 34-0 lead.

The crowd was entertained at halftime by the Islander’s own cheer team the Island Glamours, who put on a great show for the fans in attendance.

The second half was much like the first with the Islanders defense forcing turnovers and not allowing the Outlaws to move the ball with any success with one exception. Midway through the 4th quarter TC quarterback Eddy Cruz connected on a 39 yard touchdown to WR Dylan Parsons. TC tried an unsuccessful 2 point conversion which made the score at the time 46-6 Islanders.
The Islanders second half scoring featured RB Michael Blocho rushing for a TD, while Myles Gates caught a touchdown and rushed for another.

Islander president Brian Martinez said “We really appreciated the community’s support with this event. We had a good turnout with great weather.” Martinez also “wanted to thank the local businesses that displayed the event’s posters in their storefront windows last week. It is great to see the community come together to support the family after such a tragedy.”

The Islanders will next travel to Las Vegas to face the Las Vegas Cobras in their longest road trip of the regular season. That game is scheduled for a 6pm kickoff on May 5th at Freedom Park HS.
