Heelflip Heaven: Youth Skateboard Competition

Pacifica continues to be a skateboarding destination. Yesterday's contests attracted young skaters and their families from around the region.

Kids from around the region came to Pacifica yesterday to show off their kickflips, ollies, and boardslides. Skaters as young as six competed at the Pacifica skatepark in a California Amateur Skateboard League event.

One 14-year-old competitor, Bryce Downing, came from his home six hours north of Pacifica. Downing also competed in an event in Sacramento earlier in the week.

A Petaluma mother in the audience yesterday said that her daughter, Minna, had been "dragging a skateboard around since she was about two." Minna is now six years old, and she earned a second place trophy yesterday for the "minis" age group. Her brother, Finley, is nine years old and entered in both the minis and novice contests.

Later in the day, Norcal Surf Shop on Shoreline Highway hosted a mini ramp contest. Participants who did well at that contest qualified for a Warped Tour skateboarding competition in San Francisco on June 23.

Above are photographs of yesterday's minis and novice participants. They were followed by skaters ages eleven and up.
