School Board Welcomes Trustee, Learns About Yale

The Board welcomes the new student trustee, congratulates the Student of the Month, and learns more about the Yale National Institute for Teachers.

Student Kudos

Every year, Jefferson Union High School District selects a student trustee to report on student school functions at the regular board meetings. This year, board of trustees president Maria Luna welcomed Terra Nova High School senior Eunice Yu to the position.

Yu, a native Pacifican, is an accomplished student and volunteer. She has won several awards and accommodations including being the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership ambassador her sophomore year, winning the Presidential Service Award her junior year, volunteering for the past three years with the Asian Art Museum, and continuing her membership with the Pacifica Youth Advisory Board and the California Scholarship Federation (CSF).

Also, the JUHSD school board congratulated September’s Student of the Month: Westmoor High School senior Eric Mica.

Mica is a true Renaissance man; his interests reach further than his consistent over-4.0 GPA and love of science. He is an accomplished jazz musician and volunteer, dedicating his time to Westmoor’s Service Commission, wearing one of Westmoor’s “green hats” to help school security, school functions, and other service opportunities. He is also the co-president of the California Scholarship Foundation (CSF).

In the future, Mica hopes to attend to UC Berkeley or Stanford where he plans to study engineering, with a minor in music.

JUHSD Teacher Trains at Yale

Jeff Weathers, Jefferson High School teacher, presented his summer experience with the Yale National Institute for Teachers. A free program, the Yale National Institute for Teachers sponsors teachers from low-income school districts to study and develop innovative curriculum.

Weathers explained that the teachers suggest seminar ideas to the professors who then choose two to put to a vote for final study. English, math, and science are the core seminars, but teachers in other disciplines find the seminars very informative and use the information to create dynamic, multi-dimensional units.

"It’s the best staff development I’ve ever experienced," Weathers said.

His goal is to help create a local institute with help from legislation so more teachers will be able to easily participate, and he thanked the board for their continued support.

The Jefferson Union High School District is currently participating in the program. If you're a teacher and are interested in getting involved, contact district administrators.
