SamTrans Seeks Young Artists

'Art Takes a Bus Ride' will give wide play to student work.

Elementary school students in San Mateo County could get the chance to see their artwork in action when they enter the San Mateo County Transit District's annual "Art Takes a Bus Ride" competition.

The public will get an eyeful as winning artwork rides through the streets on the sides of SamTrans buses.

The transit agency and the San Mateo County Office of Education are asking students to submit a drawing of a destination they visited after riding SamTrans and to include a depiction of people and a SamTrans bus in their artwork.

Representatives of both agencies will pick six submitted designs to be featured on informational cards inside SamTrans buses and wrapped around the SamTrans "art bus." Participants may use a range of art supplies including watercolor paints, crayon, collage and acrylic paint to craft their contest entries, according to SamTrans.

Last year, six winning designs were selected from 350 entries submitted by San Mateo County students from 15 schools.

Teachers, parents and others can download the contest rules and entry form. San Mateo County teachers are encouraged to call Katie Ghazarian at the San Mateo County Office of Education for more information at 650-802-5337.

The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16.

At 12,000 per weekday, young people make up more than 25 percent of the district's ridership. In addition to a discounted youth fare, tokens and monthly youth pass, the District also encourages young people to ride the bus by offering a deeply discounted Summer Youth Pass for riders up to 17 years old.
