Pacifica Student Awarded Scholarship

Joseph Chedyak, a senior at Alma Heights Christian Academy, won a 2013 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship of $1,000.

Comcast and elected officials will join together in a celebration of education on the steps of the California State Capitol June 12, as Comcast distributes $200,000 in scholarships at a special recognition ceremony saluting the 185 California high school seniors from 30 counties who have won a 2013 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship of $1,000.

Pacifica student Joseph Chedyak of Alma Heights Christian Academy is among those being honored at the Capitol.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recognizes high school seniors for their leadership skills, positive attitude, academic achievement and various community service activities.  Since its inception in 2001, the program has awarded more than $17 million in college aid to more than 17,000 high school seniors.

Governor Jerry Brown, Sen. Darrell Steinberg, President pro Tempore of the California Senate, John A. Pérez, California State Assembly Speaker, and Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, are expected to attend the June 12 event.

Two lucky students will be surprised with $10,000 scholarships, and 20 of the winning students will have their name drawn for a netbook computer to use at college.

In addition, the students and their families will also receive a tour of the State Capitol.

The event will be televised LIVE on Comcast Hometown Network (Channel 104 on Comcast systems throughout California) from noon to 1:00 p.m.
