Ocean Shore School Raises Money in Winter Bazaar

Ocean Shore School raised a great amount of needed funds for charities both within the school and for the greater Pacifica community.

Ocean Shore School's PTO hosted a winter bazaar on Dec. 9 to raise monies for charities both at Ocean Shore and the greater Pacifica community.

The gymnasium was flocked with projects from every grade, including beautiful cut-paper snowflakes for $4 and seed balls for $3 from Shelly Denny's Special Education Class. The hallways were lined with silent auction specialty gift baskets. Each class was responsible for at least one gift basket, and with parent help, the baskets were packed full of everything from Giant's gear to spa items, items donated from Ocean Shore parents.

When asked about the overflowing gift baskets, Patty McNally, fourth/fifth grade teacher explained, "Our parent body really supports the Winter Bazaar with their time, money, and donations.  Everyone pitches in. It's a community effort."

Each grade was responsible for a gift or a theme of gifts.  One class carried paper plates piled high with Christmas cookies while another class helped to stack handmade scarves.

McNally is a big supporter of the Winter Bazaar.  She said, "It's important for kids to give back to the community. They realize that it isn't all about them, that other people have needs."

A chunk of the money raised, $4,000, went towards the Pacifica Tribune's Holiday Fund, a fund that helps sponsor programs like the Pacifica Youth Service Bureau and the Pacifica Resource Center.  In keeping with the holiday spirit of Ocean Shore's students, Silicon Valley Community Foundation matched this gift, bringing the total to over $8000.

The Family Emergency Fund, a reserve that helps families in crisis, also received a large donation, and the PTO Field Trip Scholarship Fund received $1500.  The Field Trip Fund helps cover venue, transportation, and miscellaneous costs that are not available in the school's budget.

Thanks to the students' hard work, the teachers' and administration's dedication, the parents' time, money, and donations, and the help and support of the Pacifica community, Ocean Shore and the Pacifica Tribune Holiday Fund received money to help enrich student lives and educational experiences.
