JUHSD School Board Responds to Mike Crilly’s Retirement

The JUHSD School Board thanks a retiring Mike Crilly for all he's done for the district.

A short agenda greeted JUHSD School Board members and audience on Tuesday evening. With schools recently on winter break, general news was scant, and with only structure project changes on the agenda, one would’ve thought the meeting would end quickly.

However, towards the end of the meeting, Mike Crilly, superintendent of Jefferson Union High School District, formally tendered his retirement to the board.

After describing his 40 years with the district, where he started his career in education as a student teacher in 1971 at , Crilly gave his sincere thanks to the board, saying, “This is a decision I’ve thought about for a long time, but it was difficult to say it to the board.”

He will be staying on with the district through the school year, and he will remain involved in special committees. He is looking forward to spending time with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren.

All of the board members offered their congratulations, tempered with sadness.

Board Member Jeanne Matysiak complimented Crilly on his role in the district.

“You have been a huge member of our whole school community. I don’t know how we’ll replace you,” she said.

Board Member Katherine Dulany concurred with Matysiak, adding, “You are the hardest worker, diligent and detailed. It will be a big loss for all of us.”

Both Laurie Frater and Thomas Nuris also commended Crilly on his extensive knowledge of district policy and his ability to answer questions with in-depth detail. Frater named him a “human Encyclopedia Britannica”, and Nuris added, “You are the best of the district.”

Crilly, choking up, thanked his friends on the board. “Thanks for letting me have this much fun. Thank you very much for what this district has given to me and my family.”

Because the decision to replace Crilly is of great importance to the district, there will be a special JUHSD School Board meeting on Monday, March 7, to discuss the next steps in finding a replacement.

The meeting ended with Maria Luna reminding everyone to vote for Measure C, the new when it comes in the mail.
