Cabrillo Students Learn About Farm Life at Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay

On Friday, a group of kids from Pacifica got the chance to experience ranch life.

Cabrillo School students in Mrs. Donnelly's, Mr. Olson's and Mrs. Repetto's classes visited Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay for a field trip.

Located at 1500 Purisima Creek Road just outside Half Moon Bay, the Richard J. Elkus Ranch Environmental Education and Conference Center provides unique hands-on learning experiences for San Francisco Bay Area youth.

Cabrillo School students spent the day Friday learning about and interacting with chickens, goats, sheep, llamas and rabbits. They also planted plants in the hothouse and tasted a variety of herbs and veggies from the garden.

Elkus Ranch offers educationally diverse programs and activities, including those specifically designed for students with special needs. Children learn about environmental science, California history, animal care, nutrition, and agriculture in a rural setting. Individuals and groups participate in day and overnight field trips, community service projects, and volunteer opportunities.

Registration is now open for the Elkus Ranch Winter Discovery Day camp, which provides kids ages 6 to 11 an opportunity to share in the everyday activities on a ranch. Everyone experiences helping with daily chores, working in the gardens, hiking the Elkus trails and creating a special project to take home at the end of the camp.

The camp is offered on Dec. 26 & 27 and Jan. 2 & 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is $60 per day, per child.
