Supervisors Appoint Acting County Manager

John Maltbie will serve as acting county manager effective Dec. 1.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday appointed John Maltbie the acting county manager, effective Dec. 1.

Maltbie, who served as San Mateo County manager for 20 years until his retirement in 2008, will be responsible for managing the county's $1.75 billion budget, county officials said in a news release.

“Maltbie’s extensive knowledge and experience will help the County continue its mission of delivering excellent services to the community while seeking ways to reduce costs,” the board said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Board of Supervisors will conduct a nationwide search for the new county manager. The search is anticipated to take months, and a deadline has not been set to fill the position, according to county officials.

The board also announced a subcommittee of Supervisors Adrienne Tissier and Dave Pine will negotiate a contract, which will come before the full board at a special meeting Nov. 29 at 9 a.m.

“I am looking forward to serving the residents of San Mateo County to the best of my abilities,” Maltbie said in a statement.

Maltbie will succeed David S. Boesch, who  from the position Nov. 4.
