Slam Poetry and Lunch at the Police Station for the Holidays

At a City of Pacifica holiday luncheon last week, city employees were treated to a slam poetry performance by students in Pacifica School District teacher Mike Taylor's SPARC Poetry programa program designed to teach kids creative writing styles alongside stage performance techniques. Taylor teaches slam poetry classes, and runs a number of after school slam clubs at five of the elementary/middle schools in Pacifica. SPARC’s main focus is to get kids comfortable on stage with their own writing.

"Mike and his students do amazing work," said new mayor Mary Ann Nihart, who started the holiday lunch for city employees a few years ago.

This year's event was held at the Pacifica Police station. With the help of local constituents and businesses, Nihart delivered breakfast in the morning and then served everyone lunch.

"This is the third year current and former council members plus some commissioners donated and did all the work," said Nihart. "Most of the food is donated."

Nick's, Columbo's, Mazzetti's, Gorilla BBQ, Starbucks, and Oceana Market all participated this year.
