Other facts

Private sector experience: Served as environmental and land use legal counsel for largest commercial and residential developers in country (Pulte, Shea, Lennar, US Homes).

Public section experience: I have a long local track record of actively supporting smart growth. Since I was appointed to the Pacifica Planning Commission in 2007 I have voted for, among other things: Surf Spot, the new Assisted Living Center on Oddstad, the French Patisseire bakery on north Palmetto, the new Walgreen’s in the Manor district (designed to meet LEED), the remodeled McDonald’s at Manor (also designed to green building standards), the new signage at the Pedro Point shopping center, the new look of the remodeled Safeway at Manor, and the Mega-Home notice ordinance.

I look forward to working with Pacifica residents on continuing to revitalize our commercial districts in a way that incorporates the best new ideas in urban revitalization. Pacifica’s developable areas are special places and deserve unique and bold development. Run-of-the-mill retail development (i.e., more fast food outlets and drug stores) that we see in the strip malls that surround Pacifica will not bring in the revenue we need or make Pacifica a unique place to live, work, and play. We need to dream big.

In summary, my priority will be on fostering commercial development that we can all support: Bold development that speaks to our location on the beautiful California coast, and which is capable of producing a significant and steady source of revenue we can count on.

My position as an environmental attorney at the EPA has also provided me valuable insight into the federal and state regulatory process, and a deep appreciation for the idea that the environment need not be sacrificed for economic growth to occur.

My public and private sector experience, and my understanding of planning, zoning, and environmental requirements, will allow me to move quickly to ensure the City benefits from well-planned and smart commercial and mixed-use developments throughout the City. I will also work to get the City's new General Plan approved as soon as possible.

The General Plan is the City's blueprint for future development, and will dictate where and what type of development may occur in the City. It will provide certainty to those who wish to invest in or City, so we must finalize the new General Plan quickly. In doing so, I will work on the Council to ensure we preserve our Hillside Preservation Districts, and the protections that our current planning and zoning requirements give to the beaches and open spaces that make Pacifica so special.

I will continue to promote the recreational use of open space in Pacifica (for instance, establishing an annual "sprint" triathlon event in Pacifica that will bring more attention to our town). As I did on the Planning Commission, I will continue to promote the use of green building techniques in Pacifica.
