Pacifica has a new logo.
Keep in mind that it's not a new seal--that can be --but a marketing tool that the Economic Development Committee commissioned and finally approved in December, 2011. It came before the Pacifica City Council Monday night and was adopted.
What do you think about the new design?
"The logo is intended to encompass the strengths of Pacifica as well as establish a branding identity concentrating on our greatest asset -- the ocean and hills," staff wrote in a report. "The mermaid was added to connect with the mermaid from the FogFest and Chamber logos thereby providing a link and continuity for anything Pacifica."
Not everyone on council went for the logo, however, which was designed pro bono by WavenDean Fernandes of Mana Brand Marketing, because of the mermaid on the righthand side.
Councilwoman Sue Digre voted against adopting the new design because the mermaid does not actually belong to the City of Pacifica as the rest of the logo does. It was actually commissioned by and belongs to an association of Pacifica hotels.
If an organization wants to use the new logo in its entirety, they would technically need to seek approval from not only the city but the hotels as well.
"The public should have the optoion of a mermaid or not," said Digre. "I can't vote for this this way."
In the end, however, the new logo was adopted after a 3-1 vote.
Organizations can use the logo without the mermaid if they so choose.
