Meet San Mateo County's Bike Commuter of the Year

Bike to Work Day draws thousands of participants in the celebration of bicycling as a healthy, inexpensive, and fun form of transportation to work — and school.

This year, Bike to Work Day — a partnership between the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance, Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, and Bike San Mateo County — is Thursday, May 9, and as part of the Bike Month festivities, Brandon Tyler has been named San Mateo County’s Bicycle Commuter of the Year.

Tyler works for the City of Belmont and makes his 25-mile round trip commute via bicycle nearly every day — rain or shine. He is a true cycling enthusiast who in addition to commuting to work on his bicycle also rides for fun — at least 40 miles each day on the weekends.

Tyler’s commitment to bicycling as an alternative to driving to work has rubbed off on his colleagues as well. Several of his co-workers joined him in leaving their cars at home and cycling to work on a regular basis. Tyler was able to show them the health, environmental, social and economic benefits of bicycling to work — something that others will learn first-hand as a result of participating in Bike to Work Day.

“Bike to Work Day provides an opportunity for people who are considering biking to work or to a transit station to try it along with thousands of other new and regular cyclists, while being cheered on at the Energizer Stations along the way," said John Ford, Executive Director of the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance, a public agency that promotes commute alternatives to people who commute to, through or within San Mateo County. "Once people try cycling to work, many of them make it part of their regular commute.” 

On Thursday, Energizer Stations will be set up in more than 30 locations throughout San Mateo County, including Pacifica. Cyclists can take a quick break and enjoy free coffee and snacks, get a bag of bicycle-related goodies and enter in a raffle for additional prizes. In Pacifica, the local energizer station will be at Reina del Mar Avenue and Highway from 6 to 8:30 a.m.
