Highway 1 Widening: 1999's Plan Compared with Today's

In 1999, the project would have occurred further south, cost less.

, a Pacifica resident, submitted this Caltrans plan (see PDF in gallery) from 1999 for widening Highway 1.

Notice just some of the ways it is different from the current plan:

The 1999, the highway would have been widened from about 1,000 ft. south of Fassler Avenue to about 2,000 ft. south of Westport Drive, where Caltrans identified a bottleneck. Caltrans reported in a Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) it that today's bottleneck occurs between 2,300 ft. north of Reina Del Mar Avenue to about 1,500 ft. south of Fassler Avenue.

In 1999, the widening project would have cost about $9 million total, with $3 million coming from Caltrans and $6 million coming from the City of Pacifica. would cost between $45 and $52 million and would be wholly funded by the transportation authority.

This lends some historical context to today's widening project and raises many questions. What questions do you have? Ask them in the comments below.
