Devil's Slide Tunnel Delayed — Again

Caltrans representatives say they are working on plans for a grand opening ceremony and parade in December — and there's still time to apply to be one of the first cars to drive through the completed tunnel.

Coastside residents won't be getting the $342 million Devil's Slide tunnels as a holiday present this year. The Devil's Slide tunnels completion has been delayed once again until early 2013, the Half Moon Bay Review reported.

Caltrans spokesperson Bob Haus originally told Patch in September that the tunnels would be completed by the end of this year. Representatives even said they were working on plans for a grand opening ceremony and parade in December.

"I think it's [contractor Kiewit Pacific] taking full advantage of the contract and wanting the time," Chris Hunter, legislative aide for San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley wrote in an email to the Review.

Patch drove by the tunnel in September and snapped a photo of the near-finished tunnel.

The Devil's Slide tunnels has been a long-awaited project, even drawing conversations from locally elected officials like Assemblymember Jerry Hill.

Ah, a scenario for the perfect storm. Heavy rains in early January (ala 1982) and serious mudslides close Devil's Slide closes barring access to the by-pass tunnel.

I just bought the Golden Gate Bridge for $10.00 and seriously belived Caltrans when they said the tunnel would open in December. Maybe December 2013.

The nobbes and hippies are dancing around about this $342 million dollar tunnel and have never complained it is costing too much money. But Highway 1 is going to cost way too much money and caltrans is irresponsible with taxpayer money.
