Caltrans to Hold Public Meeting on Highway 1 Widening

The public can learn more about the state agency's plan and weigh in.

Caltrans will hold a public meeting Thursday to discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Report on its plan to widen a portion of Highway 1 in Pacifica.

The report, or DEIR, considers the environmental impact—in terms of both the natural and human environment—of three different approaches to addressing traffic problems, two of which require widening the highway from between 2,300 ft. north of Reina Del Mar Avenue to about 1,500 ft. south of Fassler Avenue.

The first approach considered in the DEIR is to do nothing at all. The second is to widen the highway with a narrower, sparser median and the third is to do it with a landscaped median.

The majority of the land needed for the widening would be taken from the ocean side of the highway, and although that means possibly disturbing habitat and two areas known to be Native American sites, Caltrans states in the DEIR that with proper care, any damage would be negligible.
