Beautification Task Force Targets Linda Mar Medians

The committee is homing in on which local spots they can tackle this fall. In the coming weeks, they will begin reaching out to potential community collaborators.

This week the nine-person Pacifica Beautification Task Force made progress toward a final proposal to be submitted to City Council in September. The committee members have identified over twenty public and city-owned locations in Pacifica that they plan to revamp, beginning this fall.

City Council member Ginny Jaquith, who is chair of the task force, said they have finished designs for a demonstration project on four medians near the Linda Mar Shopping Center. Crespi Blvd. is also a priority for the task force.

This summer the group will be looking for interested community organizations and local businesses to take on the demonstration project, as well as future beautification projects. Work for the Linda Mar medians will include weeding, mulching, planting, and possibly maintaining the area after the initial revamping.

Some groups that get involved will likely help fundraise for the projects. Jaquith said that the completion of Rotary Plaza Phase 2 this spring, which brought together several local agencies and organizations, is a prime example of the wealth of Pacificans’ interest in local beautification initiatives.

The task force’s effort is not just about aesthetics, Jaquith said: “We need to keep beautifying Pacifica because that’s an important part of economic development.” She said there have been efforts to create a committee dedicated to city beautification in recent years, but it wasn’t until last October that the group came together.

“Last year [then-mayor] Mary Ann Nihart had this idea, and the whole community really rallied around that,” Jaquith said. The group’s intentions are to either dissolve or reform this fall in order to oversee the projects after the proposal is approved.

The next Pacifica Beautification Task Force meeting will be on Tuesday June 26. Thereafter, it will meet the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm in the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Conference Room at 1810 Francisco Blvd.
