S.T.A.R. Campers Interact With Law Enforcement in the Great Outdoors

The week-long camp offers some San Mateo County children a brief respite from the stress of inner city life.

S.T.A.R. Camp, the weeklong camp at the YMCA Camp Loma Mar off Pescadero Creek Road that’s primarily staffed by San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies and staff, comes to a close Friday, June 28, with a ceremony at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol Grounds in Woodside.

For the past week, 120 5th through 8th graders from throughout San Mateo County have been experiencing traditional camp activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, and archery as well as gaining life skills when it comes to Internet safety and gang awareness.

Known as the Sheriff’s Training and Recreation Camp, S.T.A.R. Camp has been offered annually since its inception in 1995. The camp is aimed at reaching out to underprivileged youths throughout the County to give them an opportunity to experience camp while interacting with law enforcement first hand, instilling in them the values, self-respect and discipline that will put them on the right path. The experience also provides the children an opportunity to experience the great outdoors and enjoy a brief respite from the stress of inner city life.

Midway through the week, Sheriff’s Office Admin, including Sheriff Munks, Undersheriff Bolanos and Assistant Sheriff Sanchez, visited the camp grounds, where they took pictures with the kids, judged a camp singing contest and ate lunch with the campers to show their support of the program.
