Standoff Between Sheriff's Deputies, Suicidal Man

Sheriff's deputies tracked down a Pacifica man to a Half Moon Bay motel after he had threatened to kill himself.

A Pacifica man who had threatened suicide entered into a standoff with sheriff's deputies at a Half Moon Bay Comfort Inn Friday afternoon.

Pacifica police had requested a welfare check on the 47-year-old man after he told his girlfriend he was going to kill himself over their breakup, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said. Police thought the man might be carrying a gun.

Sheriff's deputies located the man's car at the motel at 2930 N. Cabrillo Highway and cordoned off the area.

The man refused to come out of his room, the Sheriff's Office said. He was agitated and yelling at officers.

After 20 minutes, the man said he would come out after he finished "one more beer." He did so and surrendered himself without incident, the Sheriff's Office said.

The man was transported to a local hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. No weapons were found.
