Sheriff's Department Likely to Police Half Moon Bay

Vote by Half Moon Bay City Council on April 2 would make it official

Half Moon Bay will likely be policed by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department following a vote on April 2.

City staff recommended that council select the services in a report published on Monday. A community meeting and official vote by the council will occur at 1pm on April 2.

Pacifica Police and Sheriff's department in March for the contract. Both proposals would have saved Half Moon Bay money, but to vastly varying degrees.

In the report, the Half Moon Bay City staff calculates that the Sheriff's proposal would save the city $509,723 annually while Pacifica's proposal would save it only $80,171 annually.

"We were advised by Half Moon Bay staff that they were going to recommend that the contract be awarded to county," said Pacifica City Manager Stephen Rhodes. "The county was able to save more money than we were. We are disappointed, but we knew we were at a disadvantage from the start."

Providing Half Moon Bay with the service would have saved Pacifica money by reducing its operating, or staff, costs of law enforcement.
