Police Step Up Movie Theater Patrols Throughout Bay Area, Nation

Authorities are beefing up security after deadly "Dark Knight" shooting rampage early this morning killed 12.

Police throughout the Bay Area have stepped up patrols of movie theaters and at least one national theater chain is taking extra measures in the aftermath of the early this morning in Aurora, Colo.

Police in San Francisco will focus on theaters showing "The Dark Knight Rises," and Oakland police will increase patrols at all of the city's theaters, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Police in San Mateo will provide for the city's downtown theaters.

The increased security follows a national trend, with police officers in New York City stationed at more than 40 theaters. In Washington D.C., theater employees are searching movie-goers' bags, the Chronicle reports.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens more injured when a masked gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire during a midnight showing of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

Police say the gunman was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, according to published reports.

Authorities have identified the gunman as 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, a University of Colorado School of Medicine medical dropout originally from San Diego, Associated Press reports.
