Pacifica Receives Recognition as 23rd Safest City in California

"Having a community that is willing to be involved allows us to proactively prevent crime and when crimes do occur, to solve them." — Pacifica Police Chief Jim Tasa

Pacifica is once again the recipient of recognition as a safe city.

Safewise, a private home security provider, analyzed data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to rank the safest cities in California. In this study, Pacifica was ranked 23rd safest city in California in cities with a population greater than 20,000. The report touted Pacifica for “a rewarding quality of life that includes an abundance of community related family programs and events.”

Regarding this recognition, Pacifica Police Chief Jim Tasa stated, “I was very happy to hear that the city was ranked the 23rd safest city in the State of California. However, the Police Department does not maintain the City’s safety on its own. Having a community that is willing to be involved allows us to proactively prevent crime and when crimes do occur, to solve them.”

Courtney Conlon, President and CEO of the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, said, “Pacifica is a safe place in part because of its great commitment to community.” Conlon continued, “There are a number of factors that contribute to our strong sense of community—healthy living in Pacifica’s great outdoors; a business community that caters to the needs and good living of our community; a high-quality, well-regarded public school system; active non-profit organizations that contribute to the city’s vibrancy; and the great job Pacifica Police Department does in keeping its finger on the pulse of the community. Together, these factors create the place that we know and love—the City of Pacifica.”

Pacifica was the recipient of a similar accolade in early 2013 when it was recognized by Location Incorporated, a national residential and commercial data tracking company, as the 90th safest city in America with a population greater than 25,000. “The safety of our residents, businesses and visitors is of paramount concern to the City”, added City Manager Lorie Tinfow. “This recognition is a wonderful validation that we are doing things right and makes me very proud to lead the city organization and be part of this special community.”

The Pacifica Police Department submits crime data to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) via the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. This data is then accessed by the FBI for statistical analysis. This data is public information and is commonly accessed for the purpose of rating jurisdictions in terms of safety and quality of life.
