Pacifica Murder Suspect May Be Incompetent to Stand Trial

A Pacifica man accused of using a knife and a hammer to kill his friend during a fight last October may be incompetent to stand trial, according to a doctor's report.

Marc Furlan, 25, was arrested after police responded to a disturbance call at the home he shared with his father and two tenants on Dell Road early on Oct. 17, 2012. According to the district attorney's office, Furlan allegedly killed Keith Coffey in the front yard and tried to clean up the bloody crime scene and was attempting to dispose of the body when police arrived.

Furlan's attorney, private defender Christine Mazzei, ordered two doctor evaluations to determine if he was competent to stand trial this past month. Those reports came in on Dec. 12, and they contradict each other, said San Mateo County district attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

A third doctor's evaluation due in court by Jan. 23 has been ordered to break the tie in the opinions, Wagstaffe said.

If found incompetent to stand trial, Furlan's trial will be scheduled after the time he spends in a mental hospital. If doctor's find him capable to stand trial, the case will be scheduled about a month after the January court date, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's office.

Furlan remains in county jail where he is being held without bail.
