Man Struck By BART Train, Killed

Incident happened late Sunday night.

A man was killed after being struck by a BART train Sunday night, causing service delays on BART that stretched well into this morning, BART officials said.

BART service is running later than usual in order to get passengers to their destinations after the man was hit by a BART train at Colma station in what BART officials believe may have been a suicide attempt.

BART spokesman Jim Allison said that nine trains are still running as of 1:30 a.m. Monday and that five of those trains are running more than five minutes behind schedule. He said these are the last trains before the BART system closes.

A Pittsburg/Bay Point-bound BART train operator reported at 11:20 p.m. Sunday night that there was a person under the train at Colma station, Allison said.

Electricity to the third rail was immediately shut down and BART police responded to the scene. At 11:56 p.m. the San Mateo County coroner's office was contacted.

Allison said witnesses reported that the man who was struck by the train jumped from a stairwell onto the platform as the train was approaching.

Passengers on the train were evacuated to a separate train to proceed to their destination, Allison said.
