Man Fatally Shot at Occupy Oakland

Witnesses told the news media that a man was shot near the Occupy Oakland encampment next to the Oakland 12th Street BART station late this afternoon, Thursday, and BART reported major systemwide delays due to police activity in the area.

A man was shot near the Occupy Oakland encampment late this afternoon, Thursday,witnesses told the San Francisco Chronicle, and BART reported major systemwide delays due to police activity at the scene.

KTVU quoted police later this evening saying the victim died.

The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. outside the 12th Street BART station next to encampment and a Tully's coffee shop at 14th Street and Broadway, the Chronicle and KTVU reported.

About four to six shots were fired, and the victim was taken away in an ambulance, the newspaper reported. The Chronicle cited two longtime Occupy Oakland participants who said they didn't recognize the victim and didn't believe the shooting was connected the encampment.

BART said the 12th Street station was closed and that there were systemwide delays up to 30 minutes.
