Half Moon Bay Man in Vicinity of Lightning Strike Transported to Hospital

Man apparently affected by electric current radiating from strike during Thursday night's storm.

A man located in the vicinity of a lightning downstrike in Half Moon Bay during was transported to a nearby hospital, the Coastside Fire District/Cal FIRE said on Friday.

The Half Moon Bay resident was in the 600 block of Terrace Ave. when he was apparently affected by the electric current radiating from the strike, according to Jonathan Cox, fire captain for Coastside Fire/Cal FIRE.

Coastside Fire/Cal FIRE responded to the scene at 8:55 p.m. The victim was transported by paramedics while in stable condition to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, according to Cox.

"He's in stable condition," Cox said on Friday evening in regards to the man's current status.

The call for assistance was just one of 13 calls Coastside Fire/Cal FIRE responded to for help along the Half Moon Bay Coastside over a 24-hour period originating from Thursday's thunderstorm, Cox said.

"Normally during the 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. period, we receive two to three calls," he said.

Firefighters responded to calls for a structural fire response, multiple fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents and flooding, according to Coastside Fire/Cal Fire.

Half Moon Bay volunteer firefighters and the San Mateo County Fire Department also worked throughout the evening to keep up with the demand in calls, Cox added.

Coastside Fire/Cal FIRE advise residents to go indoors when thunder and lightning storms occur, and stay away from doors and windows while inside.
