Fatal Fall From Cliff Near Pescadero Ruled an Accident, Sheriff Says

San Jose man was heading to the beach for a family fishing trip.

A San Jose man who died from off a steep San Mateo County cliff on Friday evening was heading to the beach for a family fishing trip, according to the sheriff's office.

Ruben Ramos, 56, lost his footing at about 5:50 p.m. as he was hiking down a coastal cliff with his family about one mile north of Pescadero State Beach, the San Mateo County sheriff Lt. Ray Lunny said.

Ramos fell about 125 feet and was not breathing when family members were able to reach him, Lunny said.

Relatives called 911 from a California Highway Patrol callbox on state Highway 1 and attempted to administer CPR until paramedics arrived.

Ramos was pronounced dead by emergency responders when they arrived at the scene.

Sheriff's investigators determined that the death was accidental.
