Elderly Man Suspected in Daly City Medical Office Shooting Pleads Not Guilty

The man faces charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

By Bay City News Service:

An elderly man accused of shooting at a doctor at a Daly City medical center last month pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to prosecutors.

Raymond Iwase, 84, is alleged to have entered a medical office building at 1500 Southgate Ave. on April 23 and shot at a doctor working there, according to police.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Iwase, a Daly City resident, allegedly entered the medical center and shot at a doctor and said "'You gave me a shot in the past and you made me sick,'" referring to care he had apparently received from the doctor a couple of years ago.

Wagstaffe said the doctor, who was uninjured, ducked around a corner and started yelling at others occupants of the building to get out.

Someone inside the building called 911 and reported hearing a gunshot on the second floor around 1:30 p.m. People in the building were either evacuated or told to shelter in place while officers searched for a suspect.

Police said witnesses at the scene identified Iwase as the suspected gunman. He was arrested at his home on Plymouth Circle several hours later on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to county jail in Redwood City.

Investigators recovered a gun and ammunition at the home, according to police. Iwase is scheduled to return to court July 10 at 9 a.m.
