Update: Driver Killed in Highway 1 Crash Near Montara State Beach

The crash happened early Sunday morning.

Update 5/2 1:22 a.m.: A 66-year-old man from Pescadero was traveling north on state Highway 1 near Montara State Beach about 6:50 a.m. when something went
wrong and he lost control of his 1997 Ford-model car, according to the CHP.

The car crossed a lane of traffic and plunged more than 100 feet off a cliff into Martini Creek, which is west of Highway 1, officers said.

Responding crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Two vehicles appeared to have been involved in the collision, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

No other injuries were reported and traffic was not impacted.

A man was killed this morning after his car plunged off a cliff near state Highway 1 in San Mateo County, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP officers responded to reports of a crash on Highway 1 near Montara State Beach at about 6:45 a.m., CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.

Two vehicles appeared to have been involved in the collision, which caused one of them to leave the roadway on the southbound side and plunge more than 100 feet, Bartlett said.

The driver of the vehicle was killed, Batlett said.

His identity has not been released.

The crash is still under investigation.
