Daly City Man Accused of Shooting Doctor to be Evaluated for Competency

An elderly man facing an attempted murder charge for allegedly shooting at his former doctor inside a Daly City medical office in April will be evaluated by doctors to determine if he is competent to stand trial, prosecutors said Friday.
The defendant, 84-year-old Raymond Iwase of Daly City, appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court Friday following a preliminary hearing on Thursday in South San Francisco Felony Court.
At Thursday's hearing Iwase's attorney expressed doubt regarding the defendant's competency to stand trial, and the court suspended criminal proceedings.
According to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, Iwase was angry with the doctor for pain treatment Iwase received years ago that he said wasn't effective.
On April 23, prosecutors said Iwase went to the medical office at 1500 Southgate Ave. in Daly City, located the doctor, and started shooting at him.
The doctor was not injured, and Iwase was later taken into custody at his home.
A competency report by doctors is scheduled for Aug. 22 at 8:45 a.m. Iwase remains in custody on $2 million bail.
