Armed Man Causes Five-Hour Standoff on Commercial Avenue in South San Francisco

Police said Donte Johnson, 26, was trying to break into his ex-girlfriend's apartment.

There was five-hour police standoff on Commercial Avenue last week when an armed man refused to surrender to police, police said.

Oakland resident Donte Johnson, 26, arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s home on the 300 block of Commercial Avenue around 8:37pm on Jan. 31, police said. His ex-girlfriend, at home with her son, had a restraining order against him and wouldn’t let him in, police said.

She immediately called the police, and Johnson proceeded to kick and bang on the door, according to police. The victim advised police that Johnson was carrying a handgun.

When officers arrived at the scene, Johnson ran into another apartment and wouldn’t come out, police said.  Because he was armed, they evacuated neighboring apartments. A five-hour standoff ensued as Johnson refused to surrender.

Police activated their hostage negotiation team and the San Mateo County Regional SWAT team. Finally, Johnson surrendered after an officer warned him that a police canine would be released.
