2-Alarm House Fire in Burlingame Sparked By Fireworks

Blaze started on the home's wood shake roof and spread through the attic.

Fireworks appear to have sparked a two-alarm fire at a home in a hilly area of San Mateo County near Burlingame on Wednesday afternoon, a fire marshal said yesterday.

The blaze was reported at 3:27 p.m. at a two-story home in the 100 block of Los Robles Drive, in the hills near Interstate Highway 280.

Firefighters from the Central County Fire Department and several other agencies responded and controlled the blaze, which started on the home's wood shake roof and spread through the attic, Fire Marshal Rocque Yballa said.

One firefighter experienced heat exhaustion and was still recovering today but is expected to return to work for his next shift, Yballa said.

He said the fireworks apparently came from some kids who were playing in the home's yard.

Ybarra said it appears that some of the fireworks were of the "safe and sane" kind, and some were more dangerous -- although he noted that even "safe and sane" fireworks are only allowed in two San Mateo County cities.

"All fireworks are prohibited outside of Pacifica and San Bruno," he said.

He did not know whether any citations were issued in connection with the fire. The home's three residents were at least temporarily displaced, he said.

The agencies involved included the Millbrae, San Mateo and Foster City fire departments and Cal Fire.
