What Should Go In this Empty Storefront?

You know that empty building on Highway 1 next to the Pacifica Pet Hospital? What would you like to see there?

You might drive by this empty storefront next to Pacifica Pet Hospital on Highway 1 every day on your way to and from work, but have you ever thought about which business you'd like to see in it?

Its 2640 sq. ft. of commercial space with great visibility and a great view.

Tell us in the comments what you think should go here!

Anything That would make a profit for the owner an generate tax revenue for Pacifica. Excluding adult book stores and gentlemen clubs.

Why exclude adult bookstores and gentlemen's clubs Tom? The location is suitably isolated from schools and other "sensitive" groups, would make money for the owner, employee people, AND generate tax revenue for the City of Pacifica. Another case of Pacifica NIMBYism?

Tutoring storefront - like KUMON (the closest is West Portal, SF) or better still - one that has a focus on standardized test prep, like PRINCETON REVIEW....cater to kids who drive. Camera Movies and Photography Store - offer classes for kids and grown ups. Feature monthly "talks" by up-and-coming or accomplished Photographers and videographers - feature pioneer work and state-of-the-art work. Feature historical photos of the coast, pacifica, california. Help preserve history and teach locals how to help make it....

A good gym, with pool, tennis courts, etc. A nice gathering place for families geared to sport events

Why is there an empty storefront? Didn't Len Stone promise us new and exciting economic ideas that would fill all the empty space in Pacifica? I guess we need even more real estate build out because there is a "waiting list" of eager businesses ready to go but are being blocked by the enviros? Is it too late to blame Vreeland?
Dogbert March 02, 2012 at 04:59 PM
How about if we make the building the Pacifica Chapter of the Bhatman Fan Club? Huh? Oh, I see the problem. You DON'T want an empty storefront. Sorry...

Haha Bat man, Maybe Len can do something now that Vreeland is gone anf Dejarnett will be soon. Hard to get anything accomplished with an anti development Council. But the tide is turning Bruce.
Conrad Peterson March 02, 2012 at 06:02 PM
This is absurd. There are many empty commercial spaces all over town. Look at Eureka Square. Even if the entire Council was rabidly pro-development, it would do nothing to fill these spaces. Building more commercial won't help. But lowering rents would.

I'd like a rotating vender spot with eight or ten booths set up like a mini full-time fog fest.
Bhatman March 02, 2012 at 06:48 PM
You mean Len is waiting with his super secret plan while Pacifica's economy suffers? We want the plan NOW! I'll support it if it's real! Everyone demand the Stone plan be made public!

You do realize Pacifica has a world famous photography learning center that attracts people from all over the country? It contributes tremendously to our economy, and should be a point of pride and supported by those hungry for economic development -- but this is the insane part - it's existence may be threatened because the city though putting a DOG PARK next door was just peachy! This world class facility begged not to locate a noisy, smelly dog park next door which would interfere with it educational mission but come on, we are talking about dogs in Pacifica!
Charles Dodgson March 02, 2012 at 11:09 PM
I'm curious... Could you provide some substantiation behind this "contributes tremendously to our economy" claim? I only ask because I understand this photographer receives subsidized rent, so it would be great to understand what we receive for that money when we have to sit through his (and your) whining.

Like your idea Michele, but I don't know how well it would draw folks. C. Stanley, there is tutoring in the back of the valley of Linda Mar. I think the bigger issue is the number of empty stores in town. We just lost Hallmark in Linda Mar after years of being there. I think we need a recognizable, reputable businesses -- this is how people that drive 1 will be enticed to stop. Access to that particular lot is difficult. Yet another Starbucks? A fast food outlet? A known restuarant chain like Chevy's or Chilis. An oil stop shop? We have been so antigrowth. But the fact is that Hwy 1 is a major connector for the coast and that empty building is a golden opportunity for someone with his/her thinking cap and capital.

Hopefully people are aware of the amazing Jean Brink pool at Oceana -- http://www.cityofpacifica.org/depts/rec_department/aquatics/default.asp A great facility for family swimming, laps, even available for party rental.
