Pedro Point Headlands Habitat Restoration Volunteer Work Day this Sunday

There is a habitat restoration work day on the Pedro Point Headlands this Sunday! It will be a spooktacular event for young, old, and everyone in between!

Yes, we have a work day this Sunday on the Pedro Point Headlands

It will be a spooktacular event!!! It is a great time of year to go up there with spectacular veiws, fresh air, and no ticks to speak of (at least I haven't seen any in my last several visits). Come join us and see for yourself the work Caltrans has been doing by the Green Gate off Highway 1 where we will access the headlands. There is exciting stuff in the works by the tunnel and I can give everyone a firsthand report. I spoke with the foreman about the work there on Thursday.

Sunday, October 30th, 10a.m. - 1p.m.

Mike, Kathy and I hiked the Headlands on Sunday. Here is our a plan ...

  • The slide area we planted this year is now growing a hundred or more little pampas grass. Our first priority is to weed this area and check on the natives we planted last winter. Most appear to be doing really well! Any one up for tabulating? If so, it could be helpful to check the flags and figure out our success rate to date and going forward. If you have a hand pick or hand tool that you like to work with can you bring it.
  • There are some rogue pampas grass to remove on the South Ridge and Arroyo Trail (we only found them because of their seedheads high in the air).  There is one big Catoneaster on the Arroyo Trail not far from the road. Some of the waterbars have filled in with soil and debris and clearing them now will help with erosion when the rains arrive.
  • We can clean out the waterbars this month before the heavy rains arrive. Many are filling in with soil, pineneedles, and debris.
  • We also want to prepare a trail into the new slide area so we can start planting it when the rains arrive. Go Native made one when they restored this area but it has closed in and could use a lot of widening. (this is not for the timid--it goes through poison oak)
  • There are some late maturing seeds we can collect.
  • Finally, we would like to talk about the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree event and get your feedback and help to make it happen. Everyone, old and young, is welcome to join us. We'll take good care of you and show you a fun time.  Bring your kids, friends and family.
