I hope there is something futuristic about farmers' markets.
True, the idea of bringing locally grown and made produce and wares to a common place to sell to your neighbors isn't a new one--it's ancient--but the exchange of goods, money and conversation at opening day of the Coastside Farmer's Market in the Rockaway Beach Plaza parking lot Wednesday struck me as downright rebellious, innovative and positive in a time when nearly everything conveniently purchasable most likely comes from a field or factory thousands of miles from home.
Here's to the idea sticking and growing until it's the norm.
San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley rang the market "open for business" as dozens of shoppers perused the booths, selling everything from pottery spun right in Rockaway Beach by Anna Lichtenberg, of Mountain Light Pottery, to Hayward, CA's RoliRoti Gourmet Rotisserie rotisserie trailer laiden with glistening chickens. Many Coastside farmers were present with fresh, in-season produce, too.
Local money going to local businesses. That's how it should be, right?
