Weekend Smiles: Daring Rescue, Cute Kid Letter, Coastside Awards, and Bobcat Kitten

Need a break from bad news? Here are a few of our favorite uplifting headlines from Bay Area Patch sites.

If you’re getting tired of BART strike news or the seemingly never ending federal government shutdown, Patch is here to help with a few of our favorite happy stories from this week.

Speaking of the feds, a precocious fourth-grader from Belmont stole our hearts with his letter lamenting the fact that the shutdown forced his class to cancel their annual trip to build sandcastles on Ocean Beach.

In other beach news, Pacifica Beach Coalition president Lynn Adams won the Cox Conserves Heroes (CCH) Award, which honors volunteers who create, preserve or enhance the shared outdoor places in our communities. Now the Pacifica Beach Coalition will receive $10K for Earth Day 2014 activities and to clean up Pacifica's beloved beaches. Lynn, you make Pacifica proud!

Another Coastsider's achievements are making coastal residents feel extra proud these days. Caroline Goodwin of Montara was appointed Tuesday as San Mateo County's first Poet Laureate. Congratulations!

Over in Berkeley, a story that could have ended completely tragically got a silver lining when two motorists leapt to action to save a man struck by a train.

No round-up of good news would be complete without a cute-animal-of-the-week post. This week’s comes courtesy of San Rafael Patch, which posted this video of a bobcat kitten in Marin County.
