Ocean Shore Railroad Benefit on Sunday in Pacifica

Learn more about the last passenger car of the Ocean Shore Railroad to raise funds for its restoration.

A railroad expert is coming to town to tell the story of Car 1409, the last passenger car of the Ocean Shore Railroad which is in Pacifica.

This Sunday John Schmale will be at the Moose Lodge to present "The Parable of the Prodigal Railroad Car — The Return of Car 1409." The event, hosted by the Pacifica Historical Society, is a fundraiser to restore the old car.

Built in 1909 by the W. L. Holman Car Company of San Francisco, Car 1409 carried passengers from San Francisco along the coast to Tunitas Glen (26 miles north of Santa Cruz) and back again.

Schmale has researched the Ocean Shore Railroad for 40 years. He has accumulated a large collection of documents and pictures of the railroad and is by far the most knowledgeable expert on the history of the railroad.

Moose Lodge is located at 776 Bradford Way in Pacifica. The event starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24.

$10 admission fee. Call 650-359-5462 for more information.
