One Simple Thing You Can Do: Pet Waste

Our little everyday habits add up to great impacts on the environment. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.

Pet Waste

When pet waste and animal runoff end up in the water, they use a great deal of oxygen, and add ammonia to the mix. This is bad for aquatic life.  Also pet waste transmits disease-causing microorganisms such as cryptospiridiumtoxocaratoxoplasmosis, and campylobacteriosis, serious diseases that can be caught by humans and marine mammals alike.  You wouldn't want your kids playing on a beach with dog poo on it, or in water with these bacteria.

So if you want to help the local seals and sea lions, and the local humans as well, invest in some doggie bags! Simply pick up your pet's waste, and throw it in the trash.  Doing this on the street and at home helps too.  Those storm drains end up flowing right into the ocean, so even if you aren't on the beach, what you're doing makes a difference!
