With New Year’s comes forth the age-old tradition of setting resolutions.  Countless Bay area residents will be making a resolution that may very well save their lives - to quit smoking.  Like many other New Year’s resolutions, quitting smoking can prove a significant challenge for even the most willful individuals. Because smoking is the #1 preventable cause of death in the U.S., Breathe California, in partnership with the San Mateo County Tobacco Prevention Program, announced that it will be offering smoking cessation classes at a number of locations throughout San Mateo County beginning this January.

“Breathe California’s Ash Kickers smoking cessation program is particularly effective because it utilizes multiple strategies including nicotine replacement therapy, behavior modification, and peer support.  This multi-faceted approach is designed to fit into an array of lifestyles,” shares Michela Christensen, the Tobacco Services Coordinator at Breathe California.

The program, which is free for those who live, work, or attend school in San Mateo, consists of 6 one-and-a-half-hour sessions which offer assistance to smokers as they travel through the various stages of quitting.  Led by a trained facilitator, the curriculum covers topics ranging from stress management, nutritional tips, and how to avoid temptation.
