Unusual Soil Patterns Delay Devil's Slide Tunnel Opening by One Year

Tunnel now expected to open in late 2012.

Caltrans announced today that the Devil's Slide Tunnel will open a year later than expected.

According to the Associated Press, contruction crews are seeing unexpected rock and soil patterns in the final third of the tunnel excavation that have delayed finishing the project.

The tunnel will now be open to traffic in late 2012.

According to the AP, Caltrans does not yet have a figure on how much the delay will add to the tunnel contstruction cost, already at about $312 million.

When finished, the tunnel will bypass Devil's Slide, the stretch of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara known for precarious curves and rockslides.
