Thursday Morning Exchange: Good News for Nick's, Pacifica Eyeing Half Moon Bay Police Force and a Vote to Bolster PSD Budget

Tidbits of news and a look at the day to come

  1. It was a veritable hugfest at last night's city council/planning commission joint study session about the proposed of Nick's Restaurant and the . After Javier Chavarria of JC Engineering made his presentation to the council, commission and public, members of all three bodies gave overwhelmingly positive feedback and Planning Commissioner Leo Leon wrapped things up by saying that small problems in the plan, such as a deficient amount of parking according to the Rockaway Specific Plan, could be ironed out as the project progressed. Looks like it's full steam ahead for the new Nick's. Stay tuned for a VIDEO of the meeting coming later today.
  2. Pacifica Police Chief Jim Saunders made comment on his visit to the , which was the first step in a process that might lead to Pacifica taking over Half Moon Bay's police force. Saunders said it's still too early to tell if it would financially feasible or beneficial for Pacifica to do this (as he's still waiting for personel numbers from the city's financial department). But, he added, "the bottom line is coming up with a bid that saves them [Half Moon Bay] money and makes us [Pacifica] money."
  3. Wendy Tukloff, superintendent of the , explained to the audience at Tuesday's night's  how the district might be able to win back some of the money the state used to provide it but hasn't recently. Doing so would depend on whether two bills are passed by the state legislature in June 2011, she said, and could decrease stress on the district's budget. One bill deals with the realignment of funds from Prop 10. Under former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget, funds from Prop 10, which were allocated for students needing mental health services, would no longer be available in 2011. However, Tukloff explains, "If we have students in need of mental health services, like IEPs (Individual Education Plan), then the district is obligated to provide those monies and services. It's expensive." Currently, these costs are around $180,000. The second bill would be for a five-year extension of current taxes the district draws revenue from. This, simply, would mean the district wouldn't lose mor revenue that it already has .
